I’m not a pumpkin spice kind of girl, but I do enjoy some fall decor and a fun craft!
This is an affordable and easy project you can do in about an hour. It would be fun for a virtual girls’ night, to do with kids, or on your own while rewatching Hocus Pocus for the millionth time!
Pour yourself some pumpkin spice or a glass of wine and let’s get started!
Materials
Check out your local dollar store for cheap fall decor items. This is where I found my cute accents for this project. If you can’t make it to the store (or you’re just so cozy you don’t want to), I’ve linked some similar items on Amazon.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Burlap Banner Pieces
- Jute twine (if your banner pieces don’t come with it.)
- Stencils (store-bought or DIY with a printer, yardstick, and X-Acto knife; mine are linked below.)
- Faux Leaves
- Bows (or other embellishments of your choice)
- Paint (I used acrylic paint in Pumpkin, Magnolia White, and Dark Chocolate)
- Sponge or paint brush
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Crochet hook or pipe cleaner (to string twine through banner pieces)
I found these burlap banner pieces on Amazon and would definitely recommend them. They come with 20 pieces, so you’ll have extra to share with a friend or use for other projects. It also comes with a long piece of jute twine.
Let’s Make It!
Step One
First up, create your stencils! Or buy them, I guess, but where’s the fun in that?
I used Canva to craft my stencils. I created a document roughly the size of the banner pieces. For the Amazon banner pieces I used, I sized my document to 5 x 5.5 inches. Then, I found the font and images I liked and added one per page.
For images, I recommend fading out the color so you don’t waste printer ink. You just need to be able to see enough of the outline of the shape to cut it out.
For letters, keep in mind that you will need to save some of the “negative” pieces you cut out, unless you choose a “stencil-like” font. For example, I saved the middle portion of my “A” and taped it to the burlap to paint it.
I printed my letters and pumpkin image on card stock and cut them out with an X-Acto knife.

Step Two
Time for paint!
Align the stencil in the center of the burlap piece and hold it down firmly. You can secure it with a piece of tape. Even if you use tape, it will be pretty loose, so it’s best to push down on the stencil when painting.
I used a cut-up kitchen sponge to dab on the paint. You could also use a stencil brush or paint brush.
Dab off the excess after dipping your sponge/brush into the paint. The texture of the burlap doesn’t soak in all of the paint at once. I found it best to go lighter on the paint and go over it multiple times.
Make you sure you cover your workspace because the paint will leak through the burlap pieces. Speaking from experience. =)
Repeat this with all of your banner pieces for all of your letters and images.
Step Three
Next, cut your twine to size. As a note, you could use string or yarn instead, but I think the jute twine gives the best fall decor vibe.
It helps to string up the twine where you hope to hang your garland.
Be sure to leave a little bit of extra, about 4-5 inches on both ends, so you have room to tie loops later.
I cut my twine about 6′ 9″ and hung my garland across my mantle, which is about 5′ 3″.
Step four
Once your banner pieces are dry, it’s time to string them onto your twine.
I used a crochet hook to thread them through. If you don’t have a hook, a pipe cleaner would work, too. Push the crochet hook or pipe cleaner through the loop on the burlap piece, loop the twine around it, and pull through!
Tie loops at each end if this is how you plan to hang your garland. Mine are hooked on command strips. I just fold the end of the twine over and tie a knot. Simple!
Step Five
Time to add some fun embellishments to your garland!
I added bows to the end of my garland to hide the loops and created a second, smaller leaf garland as a second layer.
For the leaf garland, I used a 6′ length of twine. I matched similar leaves and glued them back-to-back with the twine between them.
This ensures that you don’t see the back of a leaf with the glue mark when you hang it up.
You can add any other items you like to your garland to make it your own!
Some other ideas of things to add are colored wool balls, buttons, ribbon, tassels, and fall foliage picks.
Lay out your garland and place all of your pieces on it; move them around until it looks just right, then hot glue and you’re done!
That’s it, and you have a fun, festive piece to add to your fall decor! Hang and enjoy!
